German artist Daniel Richter said in an interview, that he believes that for humanity, the goal shouldn’t be to become more dull, but always to become more sensitive. Now Richter didn’t mean to be more whiny, he meant sensitive in a powerful way, where we are able to understand our environment better, where we advance as a species. This sensitivity sounds like an abstract concept right? I believe that sensitivity means that in a given situation, you are able to observe it as a whole and then act accordingly. As always, I’ve thought of an example:
A person walks into a library where people are working in silence. He calmly sits down and works in silence as well, because he understood the situation and adjusted his behaviour.
Another person walks into the library, sits down and starts studying. The person receives a phone call, which they take and subsequently are reminded by another person to please be quiet. The person then ends the call and apologizes.
Of course this second person also adjusted their behaviour, but they weren’t able to fully observe the situation prior to their action. Hence, even if this definition sounds pedantic, this person is not sensitive.
Apart from this rather obvious example, what else comes to your mind?
