I built six raised garden beds that sat directly on top of the mulch. These were made using recycled, untreated timber. This means there are no chemicals from a treating process to contaminate the soil. It does however mean that the wood will eventually rot. The timber was lined with polythene to prevent wet soil from speeding up this process.
The start of something great. There was an existing “vegetable garden” of roughly 30 square meters on our property that I wanted to reuse. It was full of weeds, a chicken coop and two slightly raised garden beds separated by a path down the middle. As I will not be using sprays or chemicals, mulch was used to smother the weeds.
