#currentlyreading The human practice of farming food has failed. There are 7,500 known varieties of domesticated apples; we regularly eat about five. Seventy-five percent of the world’s food derives from five animals and twelve plants. Factory farmed meat is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions (about 14 percent, larger than transportation) and consumes 75 percent of the water in drought-prone regions such as the West. We are struck in a rut of limited choices, ad the vast majority of what we eat is detrimental to our health and the welfare of the planet. But what if we could eliminate agriculture as we know it? What if we could start over?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 ~ Required reading. Swipe ⬅️ for the quote from the book, spoken by Alfonso's mother, that is the exact reason why it should be in every high school and read widely by adults and teens alike.
This graphic novel is a heartbreaking look at the Black Lives Matter movement and the horrific events that have ravaged the US and necessitated the creation of BLM and books such as this one. It's an incredibly rich reading experience, combining both the story of a teen's murder by a police officer with a hip hop Hamlet storyline as well as a deep historical account of the violence against blacks in the US. The author's note shares the author's history in the movement and motivation for this story - it is a must-read part of the book. •*•*•*•*•*•*•**•*•*•*•*•*•*•
Every high school's collection should have I AM ALFONSO JONES right next to the MARCH trilogy....because the civil rights movement is NOT over. •*•*•*•**•*•*•*•*•*•*•**•*•*•
Other 2017 titles to read alongside this one are AMERICAN STREET, PIECING ME TOGETHER, THE HATE U GIVE and DEAR MARTIN.
I am not qualified to review the art beyond saying that the black and white style fully conveyed the story and the strength of the book's message. •*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*••*••

One to check out~ 🗽An information book which reveals its message in the process of explaining to readers the history of the Statue of Liberty. 🗽
The story begins in France where the Statue of Liberty was designed and assembled before being taken apart to be shipped to New York. Full of facts, then the book’s title & message is given by making readers consider the statue’s right foot, in that she is not standing still. An poignant reminder that the USA is a country that has historically welcomed immigrants, esp in a time when it has a government that does not. 🗽 #bookstagram#usa#statueofliberty#books#reading#facts#information#foot#awareness#history#american#statue
Journal entry 135: I've never liked reading. Actually, let me rephrase that. I've never enjoyed reading for fun. Back in elementary school, I was always more interested in the nonfiction books. Learning about space and nature was immensely more satisfying than reading about some character looking to conquer something, or the love of his life. However, my friend lend me this book to read. And even though it's taken me almost half a year to get through effected just a chunk of it, I like the idea of a person lending you their favorite book. I think it says a lot about that person more than words could ever tell. Still don't like reading though. #studyaway#globalbears#coffee#reading
