"... He worked tirelessly creating a great environment for his staff and customers - he cared about the industry progressing into the future - embraced new opportunities and encouraged his staff to do the same." ~ Jon (Moree, NSW) 🌾 A nomination and tribute to our very own local legend John Gourlay as part of our recent 'Local Legends' campaign. This is A.P.G Works, where our pop up shop will take place from Thursday to Sunday this week.
This building on Sidney street was once a cutlery factory and has a rich history with metalwork, with the last person in the trade to work there being a silverware engraver; Norman, a WW2 veteran who was stranded in the Burmese jungle during the conflict there and lived to tell the tale.
Almost all of the original Victorian buildings between the university and St. Mary's Gate were little mesters buildings or larger silverware or cutlery companies and indeed there still are a few surviving businesses there; Pinder Brothers, Chimo Holdings, Raven Silverware, Bob Lamb, Dave Allison, James Biggins Silversmiths all continue to produce top quality Sheffield craft in that area.
That is why we decided to hold our first pop up shop/ exhibition there, and the owner Rupert is bit of a local legend.
